One of the most popular trends of education at the collegiate level over the past decade has been the accelerated degree program. It seems like everyone knows at least a few people doing this, and it certainly offers many unique benefits and advantages. But nothing is perfect for every single one of us, so is an accelerated schedule right for you, and are there any downsides to pursuing this form of education?

One of the main disadvantages that some people run into is that accelerated programs simply mean you are doing more in less time. That means you are going to have a busy, crowded schedule, and there’s always going to be a lot on your plate.

Nobody said it would necessarily be a walk in the park to do this. When you have to think about your family and home life, all of your work responsibilities and the time you spend there, and everything else, then school can be a handful all on its own. Picking up the pace can therefore be just too much for some people, even though it could offer so many benefits at the same time.

Online programs offer many advantages, namely how convenient and flexible it is. Also, the technology has improved greatly over the past few years, providing wonderful learning atmospheres. However, it’s still online and not in person, and this is different than what most of us are used to, and it will never be able to provide a perfect classroom experience no matter how many advancements are made.

Another issue with online learning is that you’re totally accountable for itself. That’s not necessarily bad, but it means that you have to be the one that motivates yourself even when you don’t have a teacher over your back and you aren’t mandated to appear in a classroom once or twice per week.

Working online also means that you need to be able to do that, which means having the right equipment and technology on hand. You’ll need your own computer with up to date software programs, you’ll need a dependable, fast Internet connection, and you’ll also need a comfortable space to study and learn.

Finally, some kinds of programs simply aren’t going to work well in the online format. Some things you really need to work with hands-on, and learning on your own in a book doesn’t do it justice. So the topic of study is something that you need to evaluate to see if it will be match for an accelerated, online format of learning.

As you can see, despite all the hype and the buzz, accelerated degrees still aren’t going to be perfect for everyone. There are a handful of different potential disadvantages to be aware of, and it’s enough to make this something you’ll have to carefully consider. Still, despite all of the above, most people find this a convenient and accessible option that works for them.
